Treatment for Erectile
Can help if the problem is a psychological one...
Its common for middle aged men to encounter feelings of depression or dissatisfaction with life.
Sometimes, we take stock of our lives and aren't happy with what we see.
We may feel unattractive, or we may find our partners less sexually appealing than we once did.
and because men don't tend to talk these things out, these feelings can fester away and manifest themselves through our reaction (or non reaction) to sex.
Councelling may be a good way of bringing feelings, which were bubbling away just below your conscious level, out into the open where you can deal with them.

Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction by Drugs
In middle aged men the problem is usually a physical one, In which case drugs could be the answer...
The little blue pill is the most famous Impotence cure on the planet and has revolutionized treatment of erectile dysfunction.
It is what's known as a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor. Along with Vardenafil (Levitra), and Tadalafil (Cialis).
Viagra was developed by the drug company Pfizer in England, not as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, but as an Angina drug.
During trials, it wasn't found to be that effective on Angina, but was found to cause spectacular erections as a side effect.
So Pfizer very astutely marketed it as an erectile dysfunction cure.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Viagra works by causing the blood vessels in the penis to dilate more and let more blood in. Making a firmer erection.
But for this to happen you need normal sexual stimulus.
You don't just pop the pill and have an instant boner.
Viagra reproduces 'natural' erections.
A word of caution...
There are side effects of viagra.
Viagra works as a treatment for erectile problems by blocking an enzyme called PDE5, which works on your blood vessels.
It also works on an enzyme called PDE6 which works on your retina and can effect your color vision.
There are reports of people seeing blue 'halos' round objects.
Airline pilots are banned from taking Viagra within 12 hours of flying.
The more common side effects of Viagra are... Diarrhea; dizziness; flushing; headache; heartburn; stuffy nose; upset stomach.
Other more severe Viagra side effects have been...
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; memory loss; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; painful or prolonged erection; ringing in the ears; seizure; severe or persistent dizziness; severe or persistent vision changes; sudden decrease or loss of hearing; sudden decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes.
Also because Viagra dilates blood vessels. It mustn't be taken by men who take nitrate based medicines.
Combining the two can cause a fatal drop in blood pressure.
Middle aged men have died from taking Viagra and Nitrates

The other PDE5 inhibiting drugs used as treatment for erectile difficulties, although working on the same enzyme, use different chemicals to achieve their effect.
They can also have similar side effects to Viagra.
The milder side effects of Cialis and Levitra for example can be...
muscle aches Dizziness; flushing; headache; heartburn; mild back or muscle pain; stomach upset; stuffy or runny nose
The more severe Cialis and Levitra side effects can be...
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; memory loss; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; prolonged, painful erection; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; ringing in the ears; seizures; severe or persistent back or muscle pain; severe or persistent dizziness; severe or persistent vision changes; sudden decrease or loss of hearing; sudden decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes.
One of the main differences in these drugs, is that Viagra and Levitra when used as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, last for about four hours. Cialis lasts for more than 24 hours
Another drug treatment used in the treatment of Erectile problems is Alprostadil.
It works on the blood vessels in your penis in much the same way as the oral medicines. Except that it produces a near instant erection, lasting for about an hour. without the need for any other 'stimulus'
Alprostadil is taken as a pellet, which is inserted down your penis. (Oooohh)
Or it is injected into the root of your penis before you have sex.(Ouch)
"In a test carried out by Dr Giuseppe Lepore, MD and Dr Italo Nosari, MD in Italy.
Comparing the effectiveness of injecting Alprostadil on a group of men with ED against taking Viagra by mouth.
The test concluded that Whilst Alprostadil showed a higher grade of effectiveness than sildenafil. (Viagra)The greater effect was offset by the inconvenience of injecting Alprostadil."
There are also side effects of Alprostadil. some can be quite serious.
- Pain in the penis
- Pain usually mild during and after sex Has been reported by around half of users
- Prolonged erection
- This can be dangerous and is usually treated as a medical emergency
- Has occurred in around 5% of users
- Is a thickening area or a lump which can make your penis bend and can be painful

Herbal Remedies for Erectile Dysfunction
Some natural herbal remedies can apparently help in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
I'm not talking about powdered Rhino Horn here. Thats just made from the same stuff as your hair and nails.
"Just think, if all those Asian guys with ED just bit their fingernails.
They would still have ED but, there would still be wild Rhinos."
There is a substance called Yohambine
Its made from the bark of the Yohimbe tree in Africa (no surprise there then) Its also found in Indian Snakeroot.
The US National Institute of Health says it has been shown in human studies to be effective in the treatment of erectile difficulty.
Yohimbine is an alpha-blocker.
It works by increasing certain chemicals in the body, which dilate the pupils of the eye. It also dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow in the penis.
Which helps to improve erectile function."
The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved yohimbe as a treatment for impotence in the late 1980s.
It is sold as an over-the-counter homeopathic dietary supplement and as a prescription drug.
I first heard about Yohimbine through my friend Ian, who is a diabetic, and middle aged man.
I was telling him about me writing this page, when I jokingly said to him that ED was common among Guys with Diabetes.
He said "Yeah I know, I used to have problems."
He then went on to tell me about how he had read about Yohimbine supplements in a mag and had bought some on-line.
He said that he'd been taking them for about a month before he noticed any difference. But then his erections got stronger and now are like when he was twenty.
I explained that I was prepared to take his word for it, and not ask for a demonsration.
But that my feelings were, it was a bit like the Rhino horn.
His parting shot was that People in India used to chew Quinine root for Malaria for hundreds of years before it was approved by modern medicine.
Maybe there is something in it after all
Another Herbal Impotence remedy is...
Tongkat Ali root extract.
A tree native to thailand indonisia and Malaya, Tongkat ali means the walking stick of Ali.
(The cousin, and son in law of The prophet muhammad)
Its roots have been used by men for centuries as a cure for Impotence
Rhino Horn or Quinine root?
Hard to say. It was dubbed 'The Asian Viagra ' in a report in 1999
It apparently boosts Testosterone Levels, which is why it's also popular with body builders
Let us know how you get on.
I suppose, that as with all herbal remedies, there's the possibility that there might be something in it.
It's worth trying to see if it works for you.
But I'd stay off the Rhino horn, cos there aint many of them left, and it seems a shame to kill em on the outside chance that it works.
Better to bite your nails instead.
